MCQ
Multiple Choice, Objective Response, or MCQ (for Multiple Choice Question) is a way to measure a learner’s achievements in an objective manner. In this form of assessment ,the respondents are asked to select only correct answers from the options of answers displayed before them.. It is a widely utilized method of testing knowledge. MCQ assessment gained popularity due to the following advantages attributed to it –
- It prevents scoring bias
- It enables quick response
- It helps to test a learner’s ability to recall
- It helps the examiner to balance difficulty level in the question paper
- It is convenient for quick and accurate assessment
- It is very useful for measuring learner’s achievement within a short assessment period .
However the multiple choice question method is not free from criticism . This method has the following limitations –
- Errors made by the learner in understanding a topic cannot be seen explicitly in MCQ responses.
- Objective answers provide less scope for analyzing the confusions of the respondents in understanding a topic.
- It cannot develop learner’s ability to express ideas.
- Preparation of an efficient MCQ assessment is time consuming.
To make up for the deficiencies while preparing an MCQ assessment , the examiner should use clear and simple language , objective and coherent sentences and equally plausible distractors. Some other cares to be taken in the process of making an MCQ type question paper are – to avoid ambiguous words ,and clues or hints for answers . It is also advised to limit the use of “all of the above “ and “none of the above” as they prevent the examiner from getting the best answer from the learners.
